Rhi Johnson

Australian Artist

Throughout my practice I investigate elements of memory, trauma, dream experience and automatic association.  My works are deeply introspective, and serve as a conscious revision of unconscious experience.  Normally I make artists’ books and prints on paper.  Related to these methods, the idea of sequence is central to my work.  While the experiences depicted in my book works do not form a linear narrative, they represent personal dream sequence: suspended and evolving objects, recurrent patterns and imagery and frequent overlapping.

Rhi Johnson was one of five local artists whom recently completed Public: AIR, a four-week artist residency and public art mentoring program at Kontraband Studios. "During the Public:AIR residency, I learned methods of spray painting, lettering, digital image manipulation and creating large-scale image transfers.  I have applied some of these techniques in order to translate my concepts into larger scale canvas and mural works.

Public: AIR received financial assistance from the Regional Arts Development Fund. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Toowoomba Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
